Celebrating UNIFEM's 30th Anniversary

In recognition of the 30th Anniversary of UNIFEM, UNIFEM/USNC hosted a premier event under the gracious patronage of His Excellency the Ambassador of Sweden and Mrs. Kari Lotsberg at the newly constructed House of Sweden on June 22, 2007. The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton was honorary chair of the event.


The evening began with a reception in the glass-enclosed Anna Lindh Hall overlooking the Potomac River. Opening remarks by Kari Lotsberg commenced a program emceed by Neale Godfrey, President of the Children's Financial Network and star of an internationally performed one-woman comedy show. Remarks by Barbara Adams, Chief of Strategic Partnerships for UNIFEM and Mehri Afsahi, Co-President of the Swedish National Committee for UNIFEM set the stage before moving to the feature presentation of the evening, I Can Touch the Sun. This new theme song and DVD, which pays tribute to women of the world was written and produced by Lynne Revo-Cohen and Danielle Westphal of Classy Acts for the U.S. National Committee for UNIFEM.

Ferris, Baker Watts Inc., a long-time supporter of UNIFEM was the evening's primary underwriter. Ferris, Baker Watts was joined by the Calvert Group, Ltd.; Holland & Knight, LLP, TCA TrustCorp America; Diener & Associates; MacImpressions, Inc.; and many of the National Committees of UNIFEM.

 

The Congressional Women's Caucus Co-Chairs, The Honorable Lois Capps and The Honorable Cathy McMorris Rodgers, lead the Honorary Congressional Committee. Other Honorary Congressional Hosts were Senators, Olympia Snowe, Mary Landrieu, Susan Collins, Amy Klobuchar and Congresswomen Eleanor Holmes Norton, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Carolyn Maloney, Barbara Lee, Loretta Sanchez and Linda Sanchez. Partnering organizations included Vital Voices, Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), WIPP Institute and the United Nations Association-National Capital Area (UNA-NCA).
