What is UN Women?

UN Women is a United Nations fund that provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies around the world that promote women's human rights, political participation, and economic security. UNIFEM was created by a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 1976, and its mandate is to:

 

  • Support innovative activities benefiting women in line with national and regional priorities;
  • Serve as a catalyst, with the goal of ensuring the appropriate involvement of women in mainstream development activities, as often as possible in the pre-investment stage; and
  • Play an innovative and catalytic role in relation to the United Nations' overall system of development cooperation.

How does UN Women impact women's lives?

In over 100 countries around the world, UN Women provides targeted financial and technical support to:

  • Reducing women's poverty and exclusion;
  • Ending violence against women;
  • Halting the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls;
  • Supporting women's leadership in governance and post-conflict reconstruction.

What are UN Women National Committees?

UNIFEM National Committees support the mission of UNIFEM through their dynamic membership programs, public education about UNIFEM and global women's issues, and fundraising efforts to support UNIFEM programs worldwide. Currently, there are National Committees in 16 countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.

What is the U.S. National Committee for UN Women)?

One of 16 National Committees, the U.S. National Committee for UN Women (USNC) provides support to UN Women by increasing public awareness of UN Women'ss mission, and by fundraising for UN Women's programs. Chartered in 1983, UNIFEM-USNC is a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions to UNIFEM-USNC are tax-deductible.

What are U.S. National Committee for UN Women Chapters?

UNIFEM-USNC chapters are a vital part of the organization and work closely with UNIFEM-USNC's Board of Directors and Executive Committee to support the organization's fundraising, outreach, advocacy and educational efforts. Chapters are encouraged to plan and participate in UNIFEM-USNC sponsored events, such as UNIFEM-USNC's Annual Spring Walks and UNIFEM's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, but are also encouraged to plan additional events that complement UNIFEM-USNC's mission.
