GCC Fall Event: "HeForShe: What's in it for Me(n)?"

Invite the men and boys in you life to join the Gulf Coast Chapter for a brunch and our annual meeting at 10:30, Saturday, October 14, at Fete, Polo Grille, Lakewood Ranch.

As part of a light-hearted program, Dr. Phillip Wagner will present, "Beards, Biceps, and other essential Brocabulary: What the culture of masculinity tells us about the future of gender equity."

Wagner - or Dr. Phil as his students know him - is Chair of the Chancellor's Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Director of General Education; and a faculty member of Communication and Gender in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at USF Sarasota-Manatee.

The event will also feature a theatrical performance exploring gender stereotypes, and a presentation about HeForShe initiatives around the globe.

The HeForShe campaign invites men to the conversation about gender. What both women and men share is more powerful than what divides us.

The 2016-2017 Gulf Coast Chapter Season in Review

Our Annual Meeting in December welcomed new members and a streamlined board of directors and approved new chapter bylaws. Volunteers stepped up to organize upcoming activities and everyone involved came away with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for our work and the work of UN Women.

The Walk Against Violence
in March was a great success. We partnered with Café in the Park in downtown Sarasota and benefited from the support of the Pine View Peace Jam club. Thanks again to Coastal Eye Clinic for their generous sponsorship.

Through Women's Eyes, our signature international film festival now in its 18th year, had another banner weekend this past April. (See feature below.)

These collaborative Chapter efforts raised more than $29,000, all of which goes to support UN Women programs.

Through Women's Eyes International Film Festival!
We are celebrating! Our donation to USNC and UN Women will be the largest yet. This was made possible by increased attendance and by the wonderful work of our tireless volunteers.
TWE and Chapter volunteers welcomed viewers to the very best in new, groundbreaking films produced by established and emerging female filmmakers from around the world. This year we enjoyed 22 films (15 shorts and seven features) selected from more than 300 worldwide submissions.

The momentum continued throughout the weekend, with over 120 people attending our Filmmaker's Reception, meeting filmmakers, and enjoying great food and companionship with TWE attendees.

Watchers gave TWE high marks indeed! All of our full length features received  an audience rating of at least 4.5 out of 5.0! Three of our full length films were in the running for the SFF audience award.
Finally, we extend deep thanks to TWE Artistic Director Ann Fries for her unfailing dedication for the past seven years. No one has been more instrumental than Ann (right) in selecting the films that draw and enthrall our generous audiences. She has been the face and voice of TWE, tirelessly speaking to the press and local organizations about the wonderful filmmakers and films featured in TWE each year. Thank you, Annie, for your vision, leadership, and commitment. While Ann is retiring from TWE, she will continue to support the valuable work of UN Women and remain on our Chapter Board.

Mark your calendars!
We hope to see you at TWE 2018,
April 14 and April 15.

Movies are a powerful tool for change because they create awareness. Support positive change for women, girls and communities by attending TWE and other local Gulf Coast Chapter USNC for UN Women programs, because real change is happening!

The past five years, with UN Women's assistance:
  • Women around the world gained seats in seven national elections
  • Twenty-six countries reformed laws and policies increasing women's access to economic assets and social protection
  • Thirty countries improved services for survivors of gender-based violence
  • Fifteen nations incorporated gender equality priorities in national plans and budgets
  • A record 125 countries adopted laws against domestic violence
Real Work. Real Progress.

Support women and girls around the world.

Why become a member of  USNC-UN Women?

Around the world, governments, corporations, families, and individuals are realizing the universal benefits of gender equity, and UN Women is the neutral, global voice for Gender Equity.

UN Women works with member state governments, regardless of political orientation, investing in women's economic empowerment, increasing women's political participation, and making sure women's needs are equally represented in the allocation of public services.

The need for UN Women programs has never been more in demand and the Gulf Coast Chapter of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women is stepping up to meet the challenge! All proceeds from GCC activities go to support UN Women.

Happiness Walk A Success!

This year's Happiness Walk on March 18 raised almost $15,000! Dozens of participants enjoyed good company and beautiful weather, and walked to create awareness of the Gulf Coast Chapter and violence against women. The day was happy, indeed! Thank you to our membership and supporters!
