The Metro Chapter of the USNC for UN Women is celebrating our new organization. And in keeping with the theme of this year’s Conference on the Status of Women - “Access and participation of women and girls in science and technology”, we will honor women in technology and science.
Keynote Speaker: Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. Other Special guests and speakers: Susan Hassler, Editor-in-Chief, IEEE Spectrum, Saranne Rothberg, Founder and CEO, The Comedy Cures Foundation , and musical performance by Lauriel Harte Marger.

Keynote Speaker: Ms. Michelle Bachelet,
Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women.

Ms. Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN Agencies and many partners in both the public and private sectors. In February 2006, Michelle Bachelet became the first woman to be elected President in the history of the Republic of Chile. She held this office for four years, serving her full term, which ended on in March 2010, with the greatest approval from people in the history of Chile. In April 2010, former President Michelle Bachelet founded and headed Dialoga Foundation, as a way to contribute to and support a renovation of ideas, action, and leadership in Chile. She is trained as a doctor, with graduate studies in Military Sciences. She speaks Spanish and English and has a command in German, French and Portuguese. Join us as we meet this remarkable woman whose life has long been devoted to improving the lives of girls and women everywhere.

Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Spectrum

Susan Hassler has more than 20 years of experience as a science editor and journalist dealing with a wide range of complex topics from developmental neurobiology to genetic and metabolic engineering. She is Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Spectrum magazine, the flagship publication of the IEEE, the world's largest professional technology association. It is a monthly magazine that is read by over 385,000 technology professionals and senior executives worldwide in the high technology sectors of industry, government, and academia. She will talk about the impact of women technology and science.
Special Guest: Saranne Rothberg, Founder and CEO,
The Comedy Cures Foundation

In February 2008, Suranne Rothberg and her organization, ComedyCures helped launch The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Global Campaign to UNite To End The Violence Against Women. The ComedyCures Foundation brings joy, laughter, and therapeutic humor programs to kids and grown-ups living with illness depression, trauma and disabilities. Saranne has been featured by media around the world, including CNN, PBS, CBS, ABC, NPR, and The New York Times. Oprah features Saranne as her "Hero" in her book, "Live Your Best Life". Saranne is the recipient of several humanitarian awards and was the first therapeutic humor consultant called to Ground Zero after September 11th.
Musical performance

Seventeen year old Lauriel Harte Marger, and her two best friends launched a human rights’ singing group, “The Bonde”, with their adaptation of an African chant, “Kamwanna”, to protest the raping of young girls . Their socially conscious pop music catapulted them to The State Department and Capitol Hill. Lauriel then wrote “Behind The Lies”, a protest anthem to end Female Genital Mutilation, which she will perform live during our luncheon. Lauriel, who co-founded Comedy Cures with her mother, Saranne Rothberg, is a United Nations Youth Advisor and a World Health Organization Health Champion”. In collaboration with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Lauriel helped launch this year’s “International Year of Youth”.
