Celebrate International Human Rights Day and
the 16 Days of Activism with us!
On December 10, we will be hosting a free screening of the documentary, CEDAW: The Secret Treaty. Produced by the Feminist Majority Foundation, this film shines a light on some of the injustices against women in the U.S. and around the world, and explains how U.S. ratification of the Convention would serve as a blueprint to address them.
We will also welcome Jane Roberts, author of "34 Million Friends of the Women of the World." Roberts' book elaborates on her grassroots proposal that people all over the world should commit to women's health, empowerment, and equality.

Walk to End Violence
Against Women!
Join us on Saturday, June 6, at 9 am for a fun, 5-mile walk along Huntington Beach to take a stand against gender-based violence for UNIFEM's Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.
Day of Event: We will meet at 8:45 am at the Huntington Beach State Park parking lot at the corner of PCH and Magnolia and leave by 9:05 am at the latest. (Parking is $10 but you can park on Magnolia for free.)
Minimum Event Fee: $10. You can donate more or ask family and friends to sponsor you. Payment is due the day of the event. Please bring a check payable to UNIFEM-USNC.

It is we, the women of the world who must work even harder to preserve our planet, and teach our children to love, not hate."
Visit: www.artmiles.org for information on this word wide mural project, slated to be unveiled on December 10, 2010, International Human Rights Day, in the form of 12 miles of mural art built into a fourth pyramid in Giza, Egypt. The art mural will then travel to eight major cities.

Walk 5 Miles to End Violence Against Women!
The S. CA chapter of UNIFEM/USNC will hike 5 miles along Huntington Beach to raise money and awareness of UNIFEM and the Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.
Where:
Participants will meet at the Huntington Beach State Park parking lot at the
corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia (look for a sign on a black
Prius parked towards the street, about a block from the entrance). Parking
is $10, but you can park on Magnolia for free if you wish to walk to the
starting point; allow time to reach the beach. We'll provide some safety
pins to attach the "2008 Annual Walks To End Violence Against Women and
Girls" (paper) sign to your t-shirt if you wish for the walk. Or you may
bring your own sign.
To participate:
Each participant will contribute $10 (or more if you wish) the day of the event, and can also ask others to sponsor them for $10 (or more; in fact, you may want to contribute more than $10, then ask for matching funds). All checks must be turned in at the beginning of the walk and payable to UNIFEM/USA.
If you can't make this date, you can organize your own walk at a date and
location of your choice by clicking here or you can contribute without walking here.

The S. CA chapter of UNIFEM/USNC and SOKA University presented a morning discussion on violence against women in Latin America. Lucia Munoz, founder of Mujeres Iniciando en Las Americas (Women Initiating in the Americas), gave a talk entitled "Women in Guatemala: Hidden in Plain Sight." The event also highlighted UNIFEM's Safe Cities in Latin America program, which aims to free cities from violence against women in public as well as private spaces.

Southern California UNIFEM/USNC Chapter held a Celebration on June 3rd, 2007. The evening was a time to reflect on the efforts of members in developing the now 2 year old chapter, acknowledge the work of members in supporting UNIFEM and other meaningful projects. A special 'thank you' was given to Nadim Shahidi, who has been a contributor to every event the chapter has held.
Chapter friend Carolyn Verleur provided her lovely home, with a view to the Pacific Ocean, and conversations were accompanied by the singing of Sherry Williams, and her accompanist Stuart Elster. A truly lovely evening in southern California!

Women at the Center: The HIV/AIDS Crisis in South Africa
In honor of World AIDS Day, the SoCal chapter of UNIFEM/USA held their final event for 2006. The 5th Quarterly Meeting of "Stepping Forward: A Global Look at Women's Progress" focused on HIV/AIDS as it pertains to women and children in South Africa. Dr. Gabriella Miotto, Tia's Arms board member, family physician, and public health care specialist, not only spoke about how women and girls are at special risk for contracting HIV/AIDS but also how they are leaders in fighting the epidemic.

The Southern California Chapter’s 4th Quarterly Meeting of Stepping Forward: A Global Look at Women's Progress with a focus on Kenya. We were honored to welcome Njeeri wa Ngugi, Director, UCI Faculty and Staff Counseling Center, as our speaker. A native of Kenya, Njeeri wa Ngugi discussed issues of violence against women and the legal system's response in Kenya.

This year, UNIFEM/USNC SoCal participated in Be the Cause's Walk for Hope as part of UNIFEM/USNC's Annual Walk to Benefit the UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women. Proceeds from the walk went to the Trust Fund, which supports projects aimed specifically at preventing and eliminating violence against women.
