Welcome to the UN Women USNC at the University of Virginia Club

The University of Virginia (UVA) has 732 clubs/contracted independent organizations (CIOs), but not one of them devoted itself specifically towards helping underprivileged women, until now.  I started UN Women-USNC at UVA since I believe that, as students of a modern university and citizens of a developed society, it is up to me and my peers at UVA to help improve the standing of women in society.

In the 21st century, the age of progress and new ideas, women continue to stand at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder due to the prevalent patriarchal social system and lack of resources.  Female UVA students, like me, have the opportunity to secure higher education and the hopes of a promising career.

We have basic freedoms that many women lack, and I feel that it is important for the students at UVA to empower women worldwide.  It will bring a new perspective to UVA students, while helping millions of women and girls realize their dreams.

2011 UNite for Peace Conference

Highlights of the all-day conference included a spirited address by Elaine Marshall, the North Carolina Secretary of State, a youth forum panel focused on providing the "next generation’s" perspective,  a preview of an upcoming PBS film series produced by Abigail Disney on Women, War and Peace, and sessions on social media training.  Michelle Bachelet, the Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women addressed the audience in a special video message, and Antonie de Jong, UN Women Business Development Advisor, spoke passionately about the impact of UN Women’s work.  A photo exhibit of “Empowered Women” from across the developing world, by Phil Borges, was also featured.  The conference guide provides the agenda and a full list of the speakers and panelists who participated.

We hope you can join us in June 2011 for the next annual conference in Washington, D.C. where we will explore political participation and leadership of women.  Check back throughout the year for updates on what promises to be another exciting and informative event.

The official launching of the Chapter will be on June 23, 2011 between 6pm and 8pm at the Jersey City, City Hall Chambers. According to Yvonne, the chapter is looking forward to empowering New Jersey's women through its support for UN Women and its programs.

Yvonne said "With the U.S. National Committee for UN Women, our chapter will work towards raising public awareness and funds to support UN Women's projects around the world, enhancing women's economic security and rights, ending violence against women, reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among women and girls, advancing gender justice in democratic governance in stable and fragile states."

As President of the New Jersey Chapter of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women, Yvonne Garlin coordinates the Chapter’s volunteer service efforts that create, promote and support program initiatives.  She works with non-profits, community and faith-based organizations and corporations to support the U.S. National Committee for UN Women initiatives by brokering partnerships, establishing sustainable funding resources and creating effective monitoring systems.

Ms. Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN Agencies and many partners in both the public and private sectors.  In February 2006, Michelle Bachelet became the first woman to be elected President in the history of the Republic of Chile.  She held this office for four years, serving her full term, which ended on in March 2010, with the greatest approval from people in the history of Chile.  In April 2010, former President Michelle Bachelet founded and headed Dialoga Foundation, as a way to contribute to and support a renovation of ideas, action, and leadership in Chile.   She is trained as a doctor, with graduate studies in Military Sciences. She speaks Spanish and English and has a command in German, French and Portuguese.   Join us as we meet this remarkable woman whose life has long been devoted to improving the lives of girls and women everywhere.

Welcome to the Georgia Chapter
of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women

Since its founding in 2004, the Georgia Chapter has strived to promote the mission of UN Women to:

  • Reduce female poverty
  • End violence against women,
  • Halt the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls, and
  • Achieve gender equality in democratic governance.
Working with government agencies, other women's organizations and local media the chapter has brought, and continues to bring, awarness to women's issues at home and around the world.

The Chapter's annual fundraising and educational events help to drive awareness, increase membership, and raise funds to support the many ongoing projects supported by UN Women throughout the year:

Mother, Sister, Daughter  is a major fundraising event that often occurs in conjunction with International Women's Day.

5k Spring Walk to end violence against women and girls attracted 120 participants this year and generated strong support for the Internatonal Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA.)

Annual Membership Meeting provides members and the general public the opportunity to learn more about the chapter, the US National Committee, and the progress of UN Women programs around the world.  For the past two years we have provided free screenings of compelling documentary films such as Pray the Devil Back to Hell, the story of Liberian women banding together  to help end a bloody civil war in their country, and Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peach Prize Laureate, Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy.

The Chapter also uses the annual meeting as an opportunity to honor members who have made a significant contribution through their involvement over the past year with its Member Laureate designation.

Uncork Knowledge wine tasting event provides members and non-members the opportunity to meet and socialize in a casual and fun setting while learning more about the chapter and UN Women.

Please join us in creating a world where women and girls live free from violence, poverty, and inequality.
