Neale Godfrey receives the first Femme-y Award of Excellence presented by UNIFEM/USA

On Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Neale Godfrey tap danced her way into the hearts and minds of an almost sold-out crowd in Washington, DC. The 60 minute production, "Neale Godfrey is Tap Dancing Through the Boardroom," which is based on Godfrey’s career, captured the essence of many women who have tried to break through the glass ceiling.

Honorary Patron, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, sent her greetings: "I am grateful for the support that UNIFEM gives to women and girls by providing financial and technical assistance to projects that foster the development of women’s economic security, promote women’ s human rights and increase women’s participation in the decision-making processes that shape their lives. I have found in my travels throughout this country and in nations around the globe that the fortunes of women are inextricably tied to the fortunes of communities. If women flourish, then their families flourish, and the entire community flourishes."

At the close of the performance, UNIFEM/USA presented Godfrey with the "Femme-y Award of Excellence," for her commitment to "creating a world where women live free from violence, poverty and inequality." The proceeds from the evening will support UNIFEM/USA’s advocacy, education and outreach efforts.

Neale Godfrey has served as president of The First Women’s Bank and founded The First Children’s Bank. The New York Times best-selling author and "Child Advocate of the Year" currently runs her own company, the Children’s Financial Network, focused on educating children and their parents about money. She guests on Oprah, PBS, NBC and CNBC. Neale has also developed the One-and-Only Common Sense financial literacy curriculum currently being implemented in 5,000 classrooms in 48 states.

Tap Dancing Through the Boardroom – Press Release

UNIFEM/USA Presents Neale Godfrey Is Tap Dancing Through The Boardroom
At the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC – Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m.

With the gracious patronage of The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, UNIFEM/USA presents Neale Godfrey Is Tap Dancing Through The Boardroom. The DC premiere will support the education, advocacy, and outreach efforts of The U.S. Committee for the United Nations Development Fund for Women, also known as UNIFEM/USA. The committee’s efforts focus on educating Americans about the struggles of women and girls around the world, and supporting the United Nations’ international UNIFEM programs.

Neale Godfrey shattered the glass ceiling on her way to the top, succeeding in what was (and still can be) a man’s world. She was hired as one of Chase Manhattan’s first few female executives and eventually became the president of The First Women’s Bank and founder of The First Children’s Bank, but not without plenty to laugh about along the way.

"Neale tap danced her way into the boardroom and wears her success with an enviable sense of humor," said Martha Burk, Chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations and author of the newly released "Cult of Power: Sex Discrimination in Corporate America and What Can Be Done About It."

New York Times best-selling author, Neale Godfrey, takes the audience on a journey through her career in a series of hilarious vignettes. From her hiring at Chase despite a mishap with a typewriter to becoming the president of The First Women’s Bank, Godfrey relates her journey undeterred by pajama pants, "Happy Tuesday" underwear, or even tropical disease.

"You can’t survive in business without a sense of humor," said Sheryl J. Swed, president of UNIFEM/USA. "After seeing Tap Dancing through the Boardroom, I’m convinced that Neale’s success in business is only surpassed by her sense of humor in life."

UNIFEM/USA brings this one-woman, off-Broadway show to the National Museum of Women in the Arts for a premiere showing in Washington, DC on Tuesday May 10, 2005. Ferris, Baker Watts, Inc., Calvert Group, Ltd., and Counterpart International, Inc. have joined UNIFEM/USA’s efforts as Corporate Underwriters. For information about tickets and a VIP reception after the show, please contact the UNIFEM/USA office at 202-721-1530 or call 703-323-6300.

Headquartered in DC, The U.S. Committee for the United Nations Development Fund for Women works to create a world where women live free from poverty, violence, and inequality. Why is this important?

Yet, women receive only 1/10th of the world’s income and own less than 1/100th of the world’s property.
If we don’t give these women a voice, who will?

UNIFEM/USA is a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
